General Guidelines

To conduct a search, enter the name of a business or individual in the "Business/Individual" field in the "Search for lawsuits against a business or individual" page. The resulting information will appear in a table containing the following fields:

  • Business Name: This field contains the name of the business defendant(s) named in the lawsuit or AVC.
  • Individual Name: This field contains the name of the individual defendant(s) named in the lawsuit or AVC.
  • Year Filed: This field contains the year the lawsuit was filed.
  • County Filed: This field contains the county in which the lawsuit was filed.
  • Case Number: This field contains the court case number for the lawsuit.
  • AVC: This field indicates whether an AVC was entered in this case.
  • Judgment Obtained: This field indicates whether a final judgment was entered in this case.
Search Results
  • If no results are found, it is possible that a lawsuit was not filed against the particular business or individual or that the lawsuit was filed prior to 2013. To search for a corresponding judgment or settlement, visit Online Public Inspection File site.
  • Please note, AGO lawsuits allege facts related to particular defendants. This does not mean that all facts should be taken as true unless and until such time as a judgment is issued by a court of law or as agreed to by the parties. If you cannot find a corresponding judgment or settlement, it is possible that (1) a conclusion has not yet been reached in the case or (2) a defendant was dismissed from a lawsuit.
AVC / Assurance of Voluntary Compliance
An "Assurance of Voluntary Compliance" or "AVC" is a settlement where an individual or business promises to reimburse consumers or take other corrective action. An AVC is not filed in court, so there will not be a corresponding lawsuit. However, an AVC is indicative of a formal action taken by the Attorney General's Office.
